Philippe Coutinho offers honest opinion on Liverpool's progress since he left

Philippe Coutinho insists he's "so happy" for Liverpool as they stand on the verge of ending their 30-year top-flight title drought.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds are 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League, and require a maximum of six more victories to secure the club's 19th league title and a first since 1990.

Becoming the champions of England would be the crowning glory during what has been a remarkably consistent period for the Reds, who had to contend with the loss of Coutinho - then seen as their best player by many - to Barcelona in January 2018.

That £142million sale allowed Klopp to rebuild, notably bringing in the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson to shore up his side's defence.

Liverpool reached the Champions League final four months after Coutinho's sale, and after losing that clash to Real Madrid they won last June's final against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid after missing out on the Premier League title by a point.

Coutinho, by contrast, failed to shine at Barca and now finds himself on loan at German giants Bayern Munich.

The Brazilian says he has no regrets though, and has praised his "fantastic" former teammates.

“Liverpool is flying, and it doesn’t surprise me," he told Sports Illustrated.

"We’ve seen it already last year when they won the Champions League, but I’m also not surprised because of their fantastic squad and manager.

"I am so happy for them, because I have so many friends there, former team-mates, so I’m just so happy for them, but that’s all.

"I don’t look back. I took another path, and now I am on another journey, much like everyone else. I’m focused entirely – just like them – on reaching my dreams. I’m happy with what I did in the past, and now I can only look forward.”

Bayern are currently top of the Bundesliga by a point, and face Chelsea in the Champions League this month.
