Philippe Coutinho is the perfect solution to Frank Lampard's problems but only on one condition

There is no doubt that Frank Lampard will be looking to add to his attacking options at Chelsea.

It was something that the Blues boss was keen to sort during the January transfer window, however the hierarchy failed to bring in any new players.

Despite heavy interest in Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens, Lampard was left frustrated and will have to see out the 2019/20 campaign with his current squad, if it ever gets back under way.

No one is sure how the summer transfer window will look.

Right now, there are more important things in the world than football as coronavirus continues to impact millions of lives.

Football is, rightly, on hiatus and there is no indication of when it might return.

While UEFA has stated that the transfer window will open between the two seasons, no one is sure when or which clubs will have the money to spend.

While the Blues and Lampard will be keen to strengthen the squad, the question will be if they can.

Chelsea have been linked with big names as usual, with one of the latest being Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.

It is not seen as a long-term deal, with a potential loan move for the 2020/21 campaign, just like he is on at Bayern Munich right now.

The Germans have an option to buy in their deal, however the Bundesliga champions are unlikely to take that up, leaving the door open.

But should the Blues even go for him?

Coutinho is not Chelsea’s first choice, with a move for Jadon Sancho being the optimum pick.

However, Sancho is not just Chelsea’s priority, with Manchester United also keen on him and it looking more likely that he will pick a move back to the northern city.

Chelsea have Hakim Ziyech arriving for the start of the next campaign, and he will add a new threat.

But with his arrival it is likely that the Blues will be losing two wingers in Pedro and Willian, whose contracts run out this summer.

With Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi, the Blues need another forward and Coutinho has a great pedigree in the Premier League.

At Liverpool, the Brazilian was the creative drive at the club, especially in the 2016/17 season when he scored 13 times and had another seven assists.

Things have not gone so well for him at Barcelona, where he scored five times last year before being loaned to Munich.

The 27-year-old has netted eight Bundesliga goals and added six assists, playing a bit-part role in their title quest.

Lampard has received plaudits for giving youngsters a chance in his starting XI, with Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham having benefited the most.

A move for Coutinho would completely go against that ideal, but the fact Chelsea are losing a couple of experienced campaigners could mean a short-term option would be a useful addition.

Chelsea need a forward, and due to the uncertainty of the transfer window and football’s future, a short-term solution might be the only one.
