Philip Zinckernagel makes Celtic transfer claim as Danish winger explains 'sporting challenge' decision

Danish star Philip Zinckernagel has revealed Celtic were one of the clubs chasing his signature before he agreed to a move to Watford.

The tricky winger signed for the Hornets on a Bosman from Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt after racking up some superb numbers in their top flight.

The 26-year-old blasted 35 goals and assisted 36 in just 89 matches for the club and moved when his contract expired in Norway.

And he explained a move to the Scottish Premiership was one of his options but instead plumped for the English second tier.

Zinckernagel said: "I could have chosen to go to clubs where I would have earned more money. I preferred the sporting challenge to money, not that it's a bad package I've got at Watford and it's a five-and-a-half-year contract.

"I had offers from clubs in Turkey, the Netherlands, Schalke in Germany, France, Saudi Arabia and a lot in Eastern Europe.

"And additionally, Celtic were also involved.

"I had to make a decision before Brexit and I got the best feeling at Watford.

"It is a club with great potential. The overall package with their ambitions, finances and my opportunities for playing time was the best for me.

"If I didn't take the opportunity now, I might never get the chance again. It was now or never. The opportunity to be able to play in the Premier League will be greater here in Watford, I think. It will be a dream come true to get there.

"The facilities at Watford are absolutely insane. The canteen is like a five star restaurant. It's a whole different world for me. In training, there are more coaches than there were players in Glimt."
