Philip would have been 'embarrassed' by Queen's COP26 speech, author claims

The late Prince Philip would have been 'embarrassed' by the Queen's speech at the Cop26 summit, praising his dedication to the environment, his biographer has claimed.

The monarch paid a touching tribute to her late husband as she addressed world leaders in a pre-recorded video at the summit's reception.

In her speech she said there 'is always room for hope' despite huge challenges of the climate emergency.

She called on world leaders to recognise “that the time for words has now moved to the time for action”.

The Queen was speaking via a video message at a reception for heads of nations and governments at the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow.

In an apparent tribute to her late husband she wore a brooch below her left shoulder - a diamond and ruby butterfly - which was gifted to her upon her engagement to Prince Philip.

Also over her shoulder was a photo of the Duke of Edinburgh surrounded by butterflies during a 1988 visit to Mexico.

Royal biographer Robert Jobson told MailOnline the speech 'wonderful' but claimed the Prince would have been left embarrassed by the public show of affection.

He said: "I thought it was a wonderful, deeply personal touch. A tribute to a man of vision, that Prince Philip was. He would have been embarrassed. But it shows how rightly proud she was of him.

"He was a great champion for nature and the environment. A farsighted man who did so much to help preserve endangered species on this planet through his creation of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature of which he was a driving force in creating."

During her speech the Queen used her address to pay tribute to Prince Philip and his decades-long efforts on raising the profile of climate change, quoting from a speech he gave in 1969.

She added: "In the coming days, the world has the chance to join in the shared objective of creating a safer, stabler future for our people and for the planet on which we depend.

"None of us underestimates the challenges ahead: but history has shown that when nations come together in common cause, there is always room for hope.

"Working side by side, we have the ability to solve the most insurmountable problems and to triumph over the greatest of adversities.

"It has sometimes been observed that what leaders do for their people today is government and politics. But what they do for the people of tomorrow — that is statesmanship."

The Queen had recorded her message in the White Drawing room at Windsor Castle, wearing a butterfly broach that is believed to have been a gift from her wedding.

She chose the green dress to match the colour of the Cop26 climate change event.
