After a long start to the offseason of speculation and anticipation, the Indianapolis Colts agreed to contract terms with veteran quarterback Philip Rivers on a one-year deal.
While the one-year deal is below expectations, Rivers is hoping to be with the Colts longer than just the 2020 season. Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network caught up with the 38-year-old quarterback, who believes he has a lot let in his game.
“He’s fired up about it. He said it’s a one year deal, but he hopes its much longer than that,” Jeremiah said on NFL Network. “He thinks he’s got a lot of good football left in him and thinks he’s gonna go beyond that one year.”
Rivers had a down year in 2019. There’s no real way around it. He had 23 touchdowns to 20 interceptions, but his aggressive style should be a nice change of pace from the conservative style of Jacoby Brissett.
Rivers does have a connection with head coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni, both of which worked with the former during their time with the Chargers. Reich was the quarterbacks coach (2013) and offensive coordinator (2014–2015) for Rivers.
Having that connection makes Rivers feel the transition will be seamless once teams are allowed to get together.
“He mentioned the fact being with Frank Reich and Nick Sirianni—guys he has great relationships with, great respect for,” Jeremiah said. “That’s gonna be a smooth transition going to the Indianapolis Colts.”
The Colts offense was one of the worst when it came to the passing game during the 2019 season. They are hoping that will change with Rivers leading the way in 2020, but he’s hoping the stay will last longer than just one season.
