Philip Hammond accused of sneering at young people over 'building site' comments

Philip Hammond has been accused of sneering at young people after he suggested they don't want to work outdoors on building sites in wet weather .

The Chancellor declared prefab houses to be "the future", because British youngsters aren't willing to brave the elements to build houses.

He said the only way Britain can meet its target of 30,000 new homes a year is to invest in 'flat pack housing', because there aren't enough skilled workers available for traditional construction.

But Labour said his comments showed the Tories have "no faith in young people."

Brexit talks anger spills over at PMQs as May's deputy blasts Emily Thornberry

Speaking to the Treasury Select Committee this morning, Mr Hammond said: "For many, many reasons this is going to be the future, not least because I’m told by major house builders in this country that it is increasingly difficult to recruit young people who want to work outdoors on open building site conditions in all weathers.

“It’s much easier to recruit people on off-site construction inside a factory environment, where working conditions are generally better.”

Labour's Cat Smith said: “The Chancellor’s comments show that the Tories have no faith in young people, who have been disproportionately hit by austerity over the last decade.

“Instead of sneering at young people and downplaying their potential, a Labour Government will invest in young people’s lives and give them the tools they need to succeed."
