A toddler and a baby were both shot in the head in two separate incidents in Philadelphia.

The 11-month-old baby is in critical condition after being shot four times, including once in the head, while inside a vehicle at around 8pm in Philadelphia's Hunting Park area on October 10.

Less than 24 hours later, the 2-year-old toddler was killed in northern Philadelphia when a gunman fired into a home, 6abc reported.

The toddler's mother, 24, was also shot in her head and back, but is in stable condition.

Acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner Christine Coulter said: "No child should be murdered in their living room, it's just terrible."

The city's mayor Jim Kenney tweeted: "Philadelphians should not live in fear of violence that could take away a child's life.

"But for too many, this is a sad reality. With the unabated flow of illegal guns and drugs, we must do whatever we can locally to address violence and help residents."

According to statistics from Philadelphia police, there have been more than 270 homicide victims in the city of nearly 1.6 million people this year.
