Two prominent LGBTQ leaders in Philadelphia were arrested by a Pennsylvania state trooper during a contentious highway traffic stop, sparking concerns and an ongoing investigation. The incident, captured on video and shared on social media, has raised questions about potential racial bias and police conduct.
The individuals involved are Celena Morrison, who heads the city’s Office of LGBT Affairs, and her husband Darius McLean, who manages a community center. Both are Black, while the state trooper involved is reported to be white.
The video footage shows McLean being handcuffed and lying on the highway shoulder during a rainstorm, with Morrison recording the scene. McLean expresses his belief that the arrest is racially motivated, while the trooper disputes this claim. The trooper then proceeds to arrest Morrison, who identifies herself as working for the mayor.
Following the 9 a.m. traffic stop, both Morrison and McLean were detained on charges of obstruction and resisting arrest. However, District Attorney Larry Krasner has not yet filed formal charges as the investigation continues.
City officials, including Mayor Cherelle Parker, have expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. The state trooper involved has been placed on restrictive duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
The video indicates that the traffic stop was initiated due to alleged tailgating and lack of lights on Morrison's vehicle. McLean, who arrived in a separate vehicle, was arrested after a confrontation with the trooper. The William Way LGBT Community Center, where McLean serves as the chief operating officer, has denounced the stop as unjust and is seeking resolution.
Morrison, who is transgender, has been in her role since 2020 and continues to serve under Mayor Parker's administration. The incident has prompted discussions about police accountability and potential biases in law enforcement practices.
