While sports fans are still digesting Thursday’s news that Bryce Harper agreed to a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, the Philadelphia Daily News got another big win for the city with its front page Friday.
This is brilliant: “BRYCE-MAN COMETH!”
We love this headline because it works on multiple levels. First, it could be a reference to Eugene O’Neill’s play from the 1940s, The Iceman Cometh, which returned to Broadway last year with Denzel Washington.
But for a younger generation, the Harper headline could also be a hat tip to Charlie Day and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, referencing the ridiculously hysterical musical The Nightman Cometh that the character Charlie Kelly wrote in the show.
You know the one…
Dayman (ah-ah-ah)
Fighter of the Nightman (ah-ah-ah)
Champion of the sun (ah-ah-ah)
You’re a master of karate
And friendship
For everyone
It’s pretty great, especially considering things are looking especially sunny in Philadelphia right now.
However you interpret the Philadelphia Daily News‘ headline about Bryce Harper’s 13-year monster deal with the Phillies, it’s undeniable perfect.
Here’s a look at a couple other Friday front (and back) pages about Bryce Harper.
