Phil Thompson mocks Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho after Liverpool thrash Crystal Palace

Liverpool opened up a six-point gap on Tottenham Hotspur at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday lunchtime with an incredible 7-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Goals from Roberto Firmino (2), Mohamed Salah (2), Takumi Minamino, Sadio Mane and Jordan Henderson sealed a sensational result for Jurgen Klopp's charges, extending their unbeaten run in the league to 10 matches.

The Reds had opened up a three-point gap over Spurs at the summit ahead of the trip to east London, after Firmino's dramatic late header sealed a 2-1 win for Klopp's side against Spurs at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

After Salah had fired Liverpool in front via a deflected effort, Spurs drew level through Son Heung-min and looked a good bet to leave Merseyside with a respectable point in the bag.

However, Firmino's last-gasp header from an Andrew Robertson corner sealed all three points for the reigning Premier League title holders.

After the full time whistle, Klopp and Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho were spotted having an exchange of words on the touchline. Though the Amazon Prime Video cameras were unable to detect exactly what was said between the pair, Mourinho revealed in a post-match TV interview that he had told Klopp that the better team had lost.

Mourinho said: "I told him the best team lost and he disagreed, but that’s his opinion. By the way, if I behaved the same way on the touchline like he does, then I have no chance of staying there and I’m out for a minute. That’s animated?

"Do you want me to take the fourth official board from his hands and see what happens to me? For some reason, I am different.”

Now, following Liverpool's rout at Palace on Saturday, former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has sent a cheeky dig in Mourinho's direction.

The former Sky Sports pundit wrote on Twitter: "Wow, can't believe Roy Hodgson just said to Jurgen 'the better team lost.'"

Though Thompson did not name Mourinho in his tweet, it was quite clear what he was getting at with his thinly-veiled comment.

Thompson clearly felt that Liverpool were worthy winners against Spurs on Wednesday evening, despite Mourinho's insistence that his players warranted the victory, even though they left empty handed.

Spurs will have the opportunity to reduce the gap on Liverpool to three points when they face Leicester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
