Phil Taylor's comeback tournament confirmed four years after darts retirement

Phil Taylor's comeback to competitive darts will be at the Circus Tavern – where he won 11 of his 16 world titles.

The Power will be 61 when he becomes the headline act and No.1 seed at the World Seniors Darts Championship at the famous Essex nightspot in Purfleet.

A battalion of 22 former champions, including Andy 'The Viking' Fordham, John Lowe, Martin Adams, Ted Hankey and Dennis Priestley have been signed up for the inaugural tournament on from February 3-6.

The remaining two places in the 24-player field will go to qualifiers and Taylor's return will be a prime-time slot on Friday, February 4 when he joins the competition in the last 16.

It will be a bitter-sweet return to the Circus Tavern for the Power, whose last World Championship appearance at the venue was his sudden-death defeat by Raymond van Barneveld on New Year's Day in 2007, one of the sport's most dramatic finishes of all time.

His last match there was a controversial Players Championship semi-final defeat by Paul Nicholson in 2010.

Taylor said: “You'd better believe I'll be up for it. This has given me a reason to get out of bed in the morning again.

“After lockdown, there was a picture hanging on the living room wall where there used to be a dartboard.

“I didn't have the same incentive to practise when the exhibition nights stopped – but now the dartboard is back up and I mean business.”

Tickets for the World Seniors go on sale from June 1, with the tournament format already enshrined in a sets-and-legs format like the PDC World Championship.

Promoters have lined up sponsorship, TV rights and minimum £25,000 prize money to the winner.
