Phil Schofield 'spent hours' talking and hugging with wife Steph before coming out

Phillip Schofield spoke to Lorraine Kelly about the time he spent speaking to his wife Stephanie Lowe before he publicly came out as gay.

Phil came out in February with an Instagram post and an interview with This Morning co host Holly Willoughby.

He recently released an autobiography, Life Is What You Make It, where he talks in detail about the torment he experienced having been married to Stephanie for 27 years.

He told Lorraine: "The toughest time ever, when you are going through something like that and you're trying to pick your way through.

"I say in [the book], it's not in my nature to hurt people, it's just not the way I'm built.

"It went round and round, I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep, I was walking into make up next door and people are saying, 'You okay? Had a nice weekend?'

"And I knew I had spent the whole weekend staring into the fire, thinking, 'What am I gonna do?'"

He went on: "And lots and lots of hours talking to Steph and hugging Steph, we talked the whole thing through.

"There were no secrets, there have never been any secrets, when I knew, she knew."

Talking about his relationship with Steph and his two daughters, Molly and Ruby, Phil said nothing has really changed and they still spend time together as a family.

"I am very conscious of Steph and the girls, we all went out for dinner a couple of nights ago," he said.

"I am still me, they are still them, it's still us four, but different."

He also opened up on the day he simply did not turn up to work because he was experiencing such intense anxiety over the issue.

"It was a very silly thing to do because people thought I had done something stupid, which of course I wouldn't have done," he said.

* Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am
