Phil Parkinson speaks about Ethan Robson's future at Sunderland

Phil Parkinson wants to run the rule over midfielder Ethan Robson before deciding whether to allow him to leave on loan or involve him in Sunderland’s League One campaign.

Robson has spent the first half of the season on loan at League Two Grimsby Town but his time at Blundell Park ended with Saturday’s win at Mansfield Town and he will return to Wearside next week.

Grimsby have changed manager and new boss Ian Holloway has not been in touch about extending Robson’s loan, although Parkinson says other clubs have shown interest in the 23-year-old.

But Parkinson wants to look at Robson in training himself before deciding his next move.

“Ethan is going to be back with us on Tuesday,” said Parkinson following today’s 3-1 win over Lincoln City.

“He will be back with us, certainly for the time being.

“Grimsby haven’t made contact with us about extending and they have a new manager, there have been other calls about his availability but I want a chat with Ethan and to have a look at him in training before deciding where we go with him.”

Sunderland’s priority this month will be strengthening their own squad and Parkinson says a meeting is planned with chairman Stewart Donald and the club’s recruitment team next week to push those plans forward.

He said: “We’re going to have a meeting on Monday with the chairman and the recruitment team so we can get together and go through everything.

“We have been liaising over the last couple of days but with everyone having games over the weekend things tend to get put on hold.”
