Phil Parkinson on Lee Burge's injury, and gives an update on Lynden Gooch

Lee Burge went off at half-time in Sunderland’s defeat at Shrewsbury Town with a thigh strain, Phil Parkinson has revealed.

With the Black Cats trailing 1-0, goalkeeper Burge did not emerge for the start of the second half and was replaced by Scotland international Jon McLaughlin at the New Meadow.

There was no obvious sign of an injury to former Coventry City man Burge in the first period, but Parkinson said he was suffering from a muscular injury.

“It’s just a slight thigh strain but we weren’t going to take a risk when we’ve got a goalkeeper of Jon’s quality on the bench,” said Parkinson.

The Sunderland boss had made one change to the side that beat Tranmere Rovers 5-0 in midweek, with Lynden Gooch ruled out with a twisted ankle.

And Parkinson said Gooch would be absent again for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup game at Oxford United, and is likely to be sidelined for a couple of weeks.

He said: “He won’t make Tuesday.

“It’s not a serious injury, but you are looking at a couple of weeks.”

Parkinson is expected to make changes for the cup game, adding: “There are some tired legs after that game, as you’d imagine, but we will have a good chat on the coach on the way back and make the decisions for Tuesday.”
