Phil Parkinson adds new performance coach to his Sunderland backroom staff

Sunderland have strengthened their backroom team with Nick Allamby joining the Black Cats as physical performance coach.

Allamby, who has left Bolton Wanderers to move to Wearside, has worked with Phil Parkinson since 2011, first at Bradford City and then making the move to the University of Bolton Stadium in 2016.

Prior to linking up with Parkinson at Valley Parade, Allamby had worked at Middlesbrough under Steve McClaren, Gareth Southgate, and Gordon Strachan.

The 46-year-old will take responsibility for the sports science element of Sunderland's training and preparation, as well as working with the club's matchday analysts.

"I'm delighted Nick has joined," said Parkinson. "He's excellent at what he does and he will bring a real edge to our preparation.

"It's part of the process whereby the board wants to rebuild and get a structure in place to take us forward, and Nick will be an excellent appointment.

"He's coming in to be in charge of that sports science department.

"There were four people when the club was in the Championship, and we do need more expertise in there to complement the good people we have already got.

"Sports science is such an important part of the modern day game.

"We need to create an athletic team that will impress, and Nick will help us do that."

Allamby's appointment follows less than a week after another of Parkinson's trusted lieutenants, goalkeeping coach Lee Butler , left Bolton to join Sunderland.

With assistant manager Steve Parkin arriving with Parkinson, and now Butler and Allamby in place working alongside first team coach John Potter who was brought to the club by former manager Jack Ross, it is understood that Parkinson is not looking to make any more additions to his coaching staff.
