Phil Parkinson addresses reports that Bailey Wright is close to joining Sunderland

Sunderland are ready to make Bailey Wright their second January signing according to reports in Bristol - but Phil Parkinson is refusing to confirm the identity of the man he hopes to sign next week.

The Black Cats boss said on Thursday that a player is expected on Wearside to undergo a medical on Monday, after the deal was delayed in midweek.

And BristolLlive is reporting that Bristol City centre-back Wright is the man who is close to a move to the Stadium of Light, with the move put on hold last week after City suffered an injury to Nathan Baker.

But, asked directly whether Wright is the man he wants to sign, Parkinson would only say: “He is one player we have looked at and we want to make sure we have the squad as strong as possible.”

And on the timeline for the signing, he added: “Whether it is Monday or later in the week, we are closing on a few deals.”

Wright seems set to become Parkinson’s second addition following the arrival of Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty, who made his debut as a substitute in Sunderland’s 1-0 win at MK Dons this afternoon.

But Parkinson is also looking to add a midfielder, a forward, and cover for Denver Hume in the left wingback role before the end of the month.
