Phil Neville on 'toughest year of his life' at Everton and Cristiano Ronaldo tackle against Manchester United

Phil Neville has opened up on the difficulty he had when first moving to Everton and the moment that changed it all for him.

Having spent the entirety of his senior career with Manchester United up until 2005, the defender completed a switch to Goodison Park where he would eventually spend eight years.

But things weren't easy for him in the immediate aftermath of the transfer.

Speaking with Tim Cahill on Instagram Live, Neville discussed the differences he experienced initially, joking: "When we were bottom of the league in October! I'd never been outside the top half of the table!"

Opening up on the move a little more, the former Blue described it as the hardest time of his career - but one which ultimately brought a fantastic reward.

"I'd say when I left Manchester United to got to Everton, that first year mentally was the toughest year of my life," Neville added.

"I was a boyhood Man United supporter, I came to Everton and I felt as if I wasn't accepted. You think about mentally, changing clubs having been at one all my life, it took a lot out of me and my family.

"Those tough times improve you as a person and as a player. That move to Everton, even though in that first year I had so many doubts over whether I'd done the right thing, it was the best thing I ever did.

"The eight years I had at Everton were without a doubt some of the best of my life. The team we had in that period, I think it was a golden period without actually winning anything."

One of the major turning points, of course, came against Manchester United in 2008.

Neville went in to a tough tackle on former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo which angered players from the Red Devils and enamoured Everton supporters.

And the former Blue knows how important that was.

"I won the ball, Tim," he added.

"That tackle changed my Everton career. When I tackled Ronaldo...when Giggs, Ferdinand and Fletcher all surrounded me I didn't see you running after me and helping me - I was on my own and isolated!"

This month marked 11 years since another famous Blues clash against Manchester United, a penalty shootout victory at Wembley in the FA Cup semi final in 2009.

While Everton fans were remembering the victory with fond memories, some point out a perceived lack of celebration from Neville against his former teammates.

And the ex-Blues captain has now addressed that picture.

He remarked: "If you were playing against your brother and he was literally five metres away and you'd just won, would you go and dance in his face?

"I did celebrate, just not in that split second the picture was taken!"

Neville made 303 appearances for Everton in all competitions until his retirement from football in 2013.
