Phil Neville names the three Tottenham players most at fault in Southampton loss

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville believes Tottenham have several players performing "well below their best" at present, after Spurs' latest defeat at Southampton.

Jose Mourinho's men were beaten 1-0 on the south coast as they kicked off the new year in disappointing fashion, with Danny Ings scoring the only goal of the game at St Mary's.

He lifted the ball over Toby Alderweireld and finished smartly past Paulo Gazzaniga in the first half to give Saints all three points, while Spurs were left six points behind London rivals Chelsea in the battle to finish in the top four.

And Neville insists that Spurs have got plenty of work to do if they are to finish in the top four this season as he delivered his verdict on the recent performances of some of Tottenham's key men.

Harry Kane suffers injury as Tottenham slump to defeat at in-form Southampton

“I look at that Spurs squad and I think it’s a top-four squad in terms of where they should be and I think they’re being let down by two or three of their so-called best players," he said, speaking on BBC programme Match of the Day.

"You look at Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, months ago you’d say they were two of the best defenders in the Premier League, I think they’re playing well below their best and it’s why they are conceding so many goals.

“[Christian] Eriksen, he’s not really at the races this season and was one of the best last year in terms of quality and creativity on the ball, he’s not really providing any quality whatsoever. You talk about why they’re in the position that they’re in, why [Mauricio] Pochettino isn’t in the job, I think it’s because of their best players not performing at their best.”
