Phil Neville lands new job just days after being sacked by David Beckham at Inter Miami

Phil Neville has been appointed as a coach with the Canada national football team.

The former Manchester United player was axed as manager of Major League Soccer team Inter Miami a week ago with the team bottom of the Eastern Conference. But Neville is back in the game, linking up with Canada ahead of the Concacaf Nations League Finals in Las Vegas later this month.

Neville will work alongside manager John Herdman, who guided Canada to the World Cup in Qatar, while former Premier League defender Richard Shaw has also been added to the coaching ranks.

Canada play Panama on June 15 in the Nations League semi-final with a final against the USA or Panama on offer for the winners.

"Both Phil and Richard bring with them winning experiences at the highest levels and have worked with some of the Premier League's top managers during their careers," said Herdman. "They’ll work as positional and unit coaches with the aim of helping us to win our first trophy in over two decades."

Neville spent two and a half years in charge of Inter Miami before being sacked earlier this month. Club co-owner Beckham said it was the right time to make the change and hailed his former United team-mate's hard work and contribution to the fledgling club. Neville was placed under the microscope when he swore at a reporter who interrupted an answer during a press conference, said on his departure: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with Inter Miami CF. To the owners - David, Jorge, Jose, thank you for the support and opportunity to manage this great club.

"Thank you to all my staff for their unwavering loyalty. To all the players I have managed during my time here - thank you for your incredible efforts and for being the best people to work with.

"Finally, to the fans - thank you for your amazing support as always. I am immensely proud of the work that we have all done creating a culture of hard work and spirit. Also, having the courage to give opportunities to the incredibly talented group of young players we have developed during my time here. I will always have Inter Miami CF in my heart."

Neville has previously managed the England Women's national team and also served as assistant boss at Valencia for a short spell in 2018.
