'Phil Neville is maybe a road they can go down' - Danny Murphy tip for the Newcastle United job

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that the current England women's boss Phil Neville may be the right man to replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United.

The Magpies are searching for a new boss after Benitez and the hierarchy failed to agree a new contract, allowing the Spaniard to walk away.

Many names have been put forward to replace the 59-year-old but Murphy, who was sold by Benitez while at Liverpool, thinks that Neville would be the ideal candidate to take over.

Neville has guided the England ladies side to the semi-final of the World Cup - in what is his first management role in the game.

Murphy believes that Neville is a 'pragmatic' coach just like Benitez.

"If they're not going to put money in to get better players but only to bring in players of a similar type, then you need a manager who is going to be pragmatic like Rafa who knows how to organise defensively, who knows how to set up differently tactically on different days depending on different days because that is what Rafa does.

"Rafa is very good at saying 'look we're playing against these so today we're going to sit back, defend in numbers and hit them on the break' or 'we're playing a lesser team at home, we'll go after them' - he knows his tactics.

"When you look at this list, what is next for Newcastle not what has gone - how do you stay in the Premier League? I think they have to go down the line of another pragmatic manager. If you talk about [Roberto] Martinez, [Mikel] Arteta or [Giovanni] van Bronckhorst - all coaches with footballing philosophies; they could go in there and try and turn Newcastle into a free flowing football team but that could go disastrous without the right quality of players.

"So I think a more pragmatic approach, and it doesn't necessarily have to be negative - we were talking about him earlier, he's a done great job with the ladies England football side, it's Phil Neville. He's on the list. Chris Hughton, he's been there before but he is a bit pragmatic and gets the job done. Sean Dyche, not everyone's cup of tea with the way he plays but but if he was at Newcastle there is no way they'd get relegated.

"[David] Moyes is another who has been mentioned. There are a lot of managers out there who may not be appealing when they're talked and fans are going 'we don't want him' but someone young and hungry who has the capability like Phil Neville is maybe a road they can go down."
