Phil Neville brands Paul Pogba's omission from Man Utd starting XI "disgraceful"

Phil Neville has branded Paul Pogba's omission from the Man Utd starting XI as "absolutely disgraceful" and feels the Frenchman is imperative to any future success the club will have.

Pogba once again found himself among the substitutes on both Wednesday and Saturday as United's week was filled with mixed fortunes.

The Red Devils put a disappointing defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir behind them by collecting all three points from the clash with Everton.

It took until the 82nd minute for Pogba to be given a run-out at Goodison Park, though, after he played little more than half an hour in Turkey, leaving Neville irate with bemusement.

"I still think it’s absolutely disgraceful that Pogba can’t get in that team," Neville told Premier League Productions.

"For United to win a league, for United to be successful, for United to play the style of football that Ole wants them to play then Pogba has to play.

"You can play one of them [Nemanja] Matic, Fred or [Scott] McTominay and then you play Pogba with [Bruno] Fernandes."

So far this season Pogba has made more appearances as a sub than he has as a starter (six compared to five).

He was criticised after starting last weekend's defeat to Arsenal having given away the deciding penalty late on, which he put down to being "tired".

It was Fernandes who stole the show on Saturday, scoring twice to pull United from a goal down to take the lead, before sub Edinson Cavani sealed the win in injury-time.

Fernandes was given licence to roam in midfield, supported by a double pivot of Fred and McTominay who mopped up any danger in front of United's defence.

Asked whether Pogba is disciplined enough to operate in a deeper role, Neville said: "Probably not no but I’d rather go out there and score goals, go out there and go for the win playing the Manchester United way with Pogba in the team.

"I know I’ve said about him wanting to leave, not wanting to be there and his inconsistencies but I still think he’s one of the best midfielders around.

"That’s why I’m thinking: Why is Paul Pogba not in that team?"
