Phil Neville has joined the coaching staff of Valencia. The former Manchester United and England full-back, who has been working as a pundit for the BBC, was as a coach during David Moyes’s ill-fated spell in charge at Old Trafford.

He has a connection with Valencia in that the Spanish club’s owner, Peter Lim, also bought a 50% stake in Salford City from Neville, his brother Gary, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

The Valencia manager Nuno praised Neville’s experience and knowledge and said he would fit into the team’s approach and was a luxury reinforcement to the bench.

“Phil Neville has great experience at the top level of competition but above all he has knowledge and values that fit perfectly with our team and our club,” Nuno said. “He has always been a team player and our philosophy is based on teamwork. We are – and want to continue to be – a group. I am convinced he is going to help us a lot.”

Neville will replace Ian Cathro, who is leaving Valencia in order to join Steve McClaren’s coaching team at Newcastle United.
