Phil Jagielka sparks Rangers and Celtic speculation as former Everton star spotted in Glasgow

Phil Jagielka is just one of a host of names linked with both Rangers and Celtic this summer.

Earlier in June, separate and often conflicting reports placed the former Everton star as a target for both the Premiership giants.

After all, Neil Lennon and Steven Gerrard need centre-backs this summer.

And the 36-year-old, released by the Toffees at the end of last season, was always going to be linked with a move to Glasgow

Well, that's exactly where he was on Wednesday night, but what for?

Jagielka was spotted by an eagle-eyed punter standing alongside former Ibrox director of football Gordon Smith on the city's Great Western Road.

That sparked the obvious speculation that he'd travelled north for transfer talks.

But, as revealed by our colleagues at Football Scotland , there's really nothing to it.

Jagielka is friends with Smith's son Grant, and has simply come to Glasgow to socialise.

He is on the lookout for a new club, but it's unlikely at this stage he'll be playing in Scotland come next season - Rangers are not understood to be interested in Jagielka.

Regardless, there has been movement in different directions on different matters for both Celtic and Rangers .

At Parkhead, Mikael Lustig has confirmed he's leaving the club after seven trophy-laden seasons.

The Swede, as exclusively revealed by Record Sport , is set to join Belgian side Gent.

Across the city, Rangers are closing in on the signing of George Edmundson after having a £650,000 offer accepted by Oldham Athletic.

The 21-year-old could seal a deal in time to join Steven Gerrard's squad on their pre-season trip to Portugal next week.

The club are also hopeful Charlton midfielder Joe Aribo could join him.
