Phil Hogan was stopped by gardai in Kildare for 'using his phone while driving' before going to Galway

Phil Hogan was pulled over by gardai in Co Kildare for using his phone while driving before travelling to Galway earlier this week.

It happened when Ireland's EU Commissioner was driving from Kilkenny to Kildare to collect "personal belongings" and "essential documents" before heading out west.

The incident occurred on August 17, two days before the infamous 'golf-gate' dinner.

It is understood Mr Hogan travelled to Galway later that same day.

According to RTE, the documents related to EU-US trade negotiations.

The news comes as Mr Hogan apologised again for attending the dinner.

In statement earlier on Sunday, he said: “I wish to apologise fully and unreservedly for attending the Oireachtas Golf Society dinner on Wednesday night last.

“I want, in particular, to apologise to the wonderful healthcare workers who continue to put their lives on the line to combat Covid-19 and all people who have lost loved ones during this pandemic.

“I acknowledge my actions have touched a nerve for the people of Ireland, something for which I am profoundly sorry.

“I realise fully the unnecessary stress, risk and offence caused to the people of Ireland by my attendance at such an event, at such a difficult time for all, and I am extremely sorry for this.”
