Phil Healy and Nadia Power through to semi-finals at European indoors

Phil Healy was the standout Irish performer this morning as she powered into the 400-metre semi-finals at the European Indoors Championships today.

In Torun, Poland, the Cork woman dominated her heat to win in a time of 52.00, just one-hundredth of a second outside her personal best.

The 26-year-old was over two seconds clear of the second-placed European 400 metres hurdles champion Lea Sprunger. Healy's semi-final is set to take place at 6.33pm this evening.

Also in the semi-finals goes the in-form Nadia Power who looked comfortable in finishing second behind Polish 800m heat winner Anna Wielgosz.

Power's time of 2:03.16, although over two seconds off her personal best, was still the second fastest from the heats.

And the Dubliner will be eyeing a place in the final when she runs again at 6pm tomorrow evening.

There was disappointment though for Power's fellow Irish 800m runners Síofra Cléirigh Buttner and Georgia Hartigan who both finished fourth in their heats.

There were strong showings from Sharlene Mawdsley and Sophie Becker in the 400m, but neither runner did enough to reach the semi-finals.

Irish attention will also now turn to the men's 800 metres.

The heats are set to start at 6.55pm with Irish record holder Mark English and rising star Cian McPhillips and John Fitzsimon in the lineup.
