Phil Foden told how Pep Guardiola must utilise him for Man City alongside Jack Grealish

Phil Foden will have to embrace a position change if he is to hold down a permanent spot in Manchester City's line-up alongside Jack Grealish.

That's according to former City and England winger, Shaun Wright-Phillips, after the academy sensation marked his first start of the season with a goal and two assists on Tuesday night.

Injured at Euro 2020 with a problem that ruled him out of the final, Foden has stepped up his comeback over these last few weeks and - after fleeting appearances in the Premier League and Champions League - was named in City's line-up against Wycombe Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.

Starting alongside Kevin de Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and a whole host of academy stars, Foden made his mark with a strike before half-time as holders City went on to record a 6-1 verdict.

He also laid on assists for de Bruyne and Ferran Torres, either side of the break, against League One visitors.

Foden underlined his standing as one of the brightest young players in Europe last season - operating in the main from the left-hand side - but the arrival of £100million man Grealish means that he might have to tie down a regular berth elsewhere during the 2021/2022 campaign, according to Wright-Phillips.

How should City use Foden and Grealish? Let us know in the comments section below.

Speaking to Manchester Evening News via an interview with Bonus Finder, the former City winger said: "I think the little injury he had has been a set-back to him, especially off the back of what he did last season.

"He would have started the season if he was fully fit.

"Now it's just about Phil getting back up to speed and showing what he can do. It looks like he will play off the right or across the centre, at the minute, because Jack Grealish seems like the first name on the team-sheet on the left."
