Phil Foden to be given Man City dressing-down after breaching social distancing rules

Phil Foden will be reminded of his responsibility to observe social distancing guidelines after flouting them by playing beach football.

Manchester City star Foden was challenged to a game of football by members of the public at Formby beach on Sunday and joined in with the group for an impromptu kickabout.

After playing football with the group, with the kickabout captured on video, England Under-21 star Foden then posed for a photo, failing to observe the two metre social distancing measures.

Foden, 20, will be spoken to by City officials following the incident and reminded of his responsibilities, as well as the need to follow Government social distancing guidelines.

Players at all clubs have been told to maintain social distancing at all times, other than during contact training sessions, to help stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite that, Foden engaged in the game of beach football, in which he was tackled by members of the public, one of whom was holding a bottle of beer as he tried to take a green ball off the midfielder.

As well as the potential coronavirus danger, Foden also put himself at risk of injury ahead of City's Premier League game at home to Arsenal on June 17, when top-flight football in England resumes after the enforced lay-off.

Foden is highly-rated at the Etihad and has been backed to fill the void left by David Silva's departure from Manchester City this summer.

Silva, recognised as one of the greatest players in City's history, is leaving the Blues this summer after a trophy-laden decade at the Etihad Stadium.

England Under-21 star Foden has been touted as Silva's long-term successor, with team-mate Bernardo Silva convinced the starlet has what it takes to be a star for City.

“I think Phil is a fantastic player and has a great future ahead of him,” said Bernardo.

“If he stays a long time definitely [his future is bright] and I think it’s a good opportunity for him when David goes for Phil to start to play more and to have a firm position in the team.

“I think it’s tough. When you talk about City of course he’s unbelievable - a fantastic player and has a huge future ahead of him.

“But it’s never easy when in your position you have players like David or Kevin [De Bruyne] or Gundo [Ilkay Gundogan].

“So, he needs to stay calm, to work a lot and these opportunities will come.

“Whenever he plays, he plays great, the more we go the more opportunities will come and I’m sure in the near future he will be a very, very important player for City.”
