Phil Foden steals the show but England U21s boss Aidy Boothroyd demands more

Phil Foden delivering another match winning show for England U21s – and was told he can play better by boss Aidy Boothroyd.

The Manchester City midfielder has taken the Young Lions qualifying campaign by storm.

After two assists in the opener in Turkey last week, he unlocked Kosovo with a first half strike, and a second deep in injury time.

Boothroyd said: “Phil has not played as well as he can! He is happy with his goals, but he wants to be better."

One of the biggest mistakes of Boothroyd's tenure was resting the play-maker for the must-win game against Romania during the finals in Italy in June, a game they went on to lose.

The 19-year-old is now certain to be the kid England build around.

Boothroyd's biggest worry may be having Foden called into Gareth Southgate's senior squad if he can get more starts at City, where he has David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne as rivals.

Boothroyd added: "He took his goals well. The more he plays for us the more he showcases what he can do for his club.

“I hope Phil will be with us for the duration of this campaign. This job is more than being a coach. It is like a reserve team manager (for the seniors). Players are in and out of teams.

“If Phil keeps learning, that is the great thing about him. He wants to be better. That is the most exciting thing about him.”

Foden converted a relatively simple rebound, after Steven Sessegnon's shot was cleared off the line, finishing a sweeping 14 pass move after 25 minutes.

They took his tally to three in an U21 shirt, his first against France in the summer was an individual marvel.

Eddie Nketiah should have doubled the lead after Morgan Gibbs-White's chest pass, but shot wide after the break. Reiss Nelson also had a powerful shot well saved.

A goal saving tackle was required by Max Aarons to keep England ahead with ten minutes to go.

“Tom Davies ( Everton ) and Max Aarons (Norwich) were our outstanding players. Max did a brilliant block at the end.”
