Phil Foden names unsung hero at Man City after signing new five-year contract

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has claimed that Rodri does not get enough credit for the "important" role he plays in Pep Guardiola's side.

The 22-year-old signed a new contract at City on Friday that will see him stay at the club until 2027. His previous contract had been set to expire in 2024, with the club showing the faith they have in their young midfielder.

Foden has quickly worked his way up through the ranks during his time at City, asserting himself as one of Guardiola's most valuable players. The Spaniard knows how important a player the England international is, with his ability to play in a variety of positions making him a key asset to the club.

In a team full of stars, the fact that Foden is still standing out speaks volumes. However, the club's academy graduate has claimed that his teammate Rodri does not get enough credit for the vital role he performs in the side.

Foden said: “I think it goes unnoticed with a player like Rodrigo and what he does for the team. Because we have so many goalscorers, a player like him is so important. He breaks the play up, he’s so good on the ball. You can see his long-range shooting is there as well so he’s so important for the team. He definitely helps all the players up the pitch play a lot better.”

The City midfielder was also asked about the squad's spirit and he revealed how important the connection the players have off the pitch has been to their recent success.

He added: “I think it’s massively important. If you put all the best players in a team, they’re not necessarily going to win. That togetherness when things aren’t going so well, how you fight for each other can be more important than anything else. I think our team definitely has that and it’s good.”
