Phil Foden makes Man City prediction after Tottenham win

Phil Foden reckons this Manchester City team can become iconic if they can retain their Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola's side achieved the unthinkable last season when they broke all manner of records to finish on 100 points for the season, dropping just 14 across 38 games.

Such an achievement generated a debate over the team's place among the best teams seen in English football. But while there was comparison to Arsenal's Invincibles campaign, the general feeling was that City would have to achieve success over more than a single year to challenge some of Sir Alex Ferguson's United teams or Jose Mourinho's Chelsea in their pomp.

Fast-forward 12 months and City could be about to become the first side in a decade to successfully defend the title - and recording the second-highest points tally in Premier League history when they do.

With four games to go, the Blues know that four wins will lift them to 98 points whereas Liverpool can only manage 97. Foden, who scored his first Premier League goal to help secure a crucial win over Tottenham, believes the win has restored the confidence after the draining Champions League defeat in midweek.

"I think this result has picked us up from the other day," he said.

"We're ready to go, feeling confident, with smiles on our faces and we know we can do it. I can't see Liverpool dropping points, so I think we need to win them all.

"It's all down to us, win all our games we win the league, so we're feeling confident and were going to give it everything, and see where it takes us.

"When we won the league last time we were miles in front but this is better because we've actually had a a challenge, someone fighting with us. If we can do this, then people are going to have to start thinking that we're one of the best teams ever."

The biggest obstacle in City's way on paper looks to be United, the last team to defend a title. Guardiola takes his team to Old Trafford on Wednesday night before finishing off the season with Burnley away, Leicester at home and Brighton away.

Foden was described as a gift after making his club debut in a friendly against United in the summer of 2017, and Kevin De Bruyne's injury means that the 18-year-old could feature again.

"It's a very difficult game to go to United and play well, but I know we're capable of doing it and if we win that one we're a step closer. Let's see what happens, but I'm confident," he said.

"Obviously any game I'm going to play I'm going to be excited, and I'm just waiting for my opportunities."
