Phil Foden has signed a new six-year contract at Manchester City worth £30,000 per week, tying his future to the club until June 2024.
The 18-year-old’s current contract was set to expire at the end of next season, however, the U-17 World Cup winner had already made it clear to the club that he intended to stay, and the new deal was concluded swiftly with contracts signed this afternoon.
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said: “We are delighted to have secured Phil for the next five and a half years.
“He is an outstanding talent and he is Manchester City born and bred so this is where he wants to play his football.
“Under Pep [Guardiola] and with the players we have here around him, he is in the best place possible to develop as a player.”
Foden has been a part of City’s academy since he was eight years old and dismissed the possibility of going out on loan to get further first team action this season, with a number of clubs' approaches being swatted away.
However, City were still keen to conclude the deal quickly with the U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner, after losing Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund, as well as 19-year-old midfielder Brahim Diaz who is reportedly set to join Real Madrid in the summer.
Foden has been in the squad for all but one of Manchester City’s Premier League matches this season, coming off the bench eight times thus far and Guardiola is a keen admirer of the England starlet, stating in pre-season that he was a gift to the club.
“It’s a long time since I saw something like this. His performance was another level. He’s 17-years-old, he’s a City player, he grew up in the Academy, he loves the Club, he’s a City fan and for us he’s a gift.”
