Phil Foden explains what he said to Alfie May after Cheltenham v Man City

Phil Foden was magnanimous in victory after Manchester City survived a major FA Cup scare against Cheltenham Town.

A massive upset was on the cards after Alfie May gave League Two side Cheltenham a shock lead in Saturday's fourth round tie at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium just before the hour mark.

It stayed that way until less there was less than 10 minutes to go as Foden equalised in the 81st minute.

Gabriel Jesus then put City in front three minutes later, and Ferran Torres sealed the victory with a third goal deep into added time.

Foden was seen in conversation with Cheltenham goalscorer May at the final whistle and was asked what was said in his post-match interview with the BBC.

“I said he’s a great player," the City midfielder replied. "I think he’s their most influential player.

"I said he had a great game and your team did well today."

On the game itself, Foden said: “I thought we were a bit slow at times in the first-half, but it was all down to them.

"They played really well and made it really hard for us, they sat in deep and had a good shape.

"The pitch was a bit bobbly at times as well, but in the end, I’m delighted we got the win."

Asked what boss Pep Guardiola said to his players at the interval, Foden added: “He said that we were playing well and to keep going, but some of the long balls weren’t working in the first-half, it was just bouncing out of play, so he said to try and keep it shorter.

"I think we did that well in the second half, we broke the lines with the passes and in the end, we got the goal."

As for getting his ninth goal of the season, Foden said: “I’m loving it, you know. You can ask anyone, there’s no better feeling than scoring. Yeah, I’m just enjoying it at the moment, scoring a lot of goals. I just want to keep scoring because that’s what I enjoy."

It was then suggested to Foden that his current form would give Guardiola no choice but to pick him every game.

"I’m playing well at the moment but you can easily have a bad performance," he said.

"For me, I wanna keep improving and trying to stay on top of my game because the best players in the world are consistent every game, so I want to try to be like this."
