Phil Foden has been rewarded for his fine Manchester City form with a debut call-up to the senior England squad.
Foden, 20, has been knocking on the door of the England side for some time, but manager Gareth Southgate has always insisted the youngster must be playing regularly for City in order to be considered. The youngster has 15 appearances for the U21s, scoring four times.
So Foden's run of eight starts in the last 13 games of the season, plus five substitute appearances, has been enough to earn a spot in the senior squad for the Nations League fixtures against Iceland and Denmark next month.
Foden scored five times in that run of games, with two assists, as he shone since the restart in his first regular run of Premier League action.
Also in the squad is Raheem Sterling, while Kyle Walker earns a recall for the first time in over a year. Southgate used his squads in the first half of the 2019/20 season to experiment with his wealth of other right-backs, before the March and June internationals were cancelled, but Walker produced a series of impressive displays since the restart to earn his place back in the squad.
As for Sterling, the winger is included despite suggestions he may be left out after attending a party for Usain Bolt in Jamaica, with the sprinter subsequently testing positive for Covid-19. However, Sterling has reportedly tested negative himself and will be tested again before linking up with the Three Lions.
John Stones is overlooked for the fourth time in six squads, as he struggled for form last season.
The trio join Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, Ferran Torres, Nathan Ake, Kevin De Bruyne, Eric Garcia and Rodri in receiving international call-ups for the September internationals, to take place between Thursday 3 and Tuesday 8 September.
Full England squad to face Iceland and Denmark: Abraham, Alexander-Arnold, Dier, Foden, Gomez, Greenwood, D. Henderson, Ings, Kane, Keane, Maguire, Mings, Mount, Phillips, Pickford, Pope, Rashford, Rice, Sancho, Sterling, Trippier, Walker, Ward-Prowse, Winks.
