'Phew' - Alan Shearer's verdict on Newcastle United's thrilling victory over West Ham

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was clearly a relieved man at full-time as the Magpies held on for an important victory in the capital.

Goals from Ciaran Clark, Federico Fernandez, and Jonjo Shelvey looked to have swashbuckling United on course for a comfortable victory at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

But Fabian Balbuena pounced on a loose ball at a set-piece to bring West Ham back into the contest, and Robert Snodgrass setup a tense finale with a second just before added time.

Steve Bruce's side held on for a much-needed three points which lifted United into 15th place - four points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone.

And the club's record goalscorer echoed the emotions of the fanbase when he tweeted his relief at full-time.

He posted: "Phewwwwwwww. Well done lads. @NUFC ."

The victory is United's second of the current campaign and their second in London following their impressive triumph at Tottenham in August.

It was also the first time this season the Magpies scored more than one goal in a match.

Bruce described November as a "critical part of the season", and United will surely be focused on making it back-to-back victories when they host Bournemouth next Saturday.
