Pheu Thai to name PM pick today

The Pheu Thai Party is expected to finalise its prime ministerial nomination today amid speculation that former transport minister Chadchart Sittipunt will be named as the party's candidate.

Jirayu Huangsap, a Pheu Thai MP for Bangkok, said the party will hold a meeting later this afternoon to decide on who to propose as a candidate ahead of the vote by the parliament.

He said it is possible that Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan -- one of the prime ministerial candidates and its chief strategist -- may not be nominated because she has publicly announced she would not take up the post.

Pheu Thai provisionally named three people as prime ministerial candidates -- Khunying Sudarat, Mr Chadchart, and former justice minister Chaikasem Nitisiri.

Another source in the party said the Pheu Thai alliance is likely to nominate a prime ministerial candidate from Pheu Thai rather than Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit.

Previously, the party had said that it will not demand that its candidates get the top job, and called on other political parties to join hands to defeat what it calls "a dictatorship in disguise". Mr Thanathorn also declared he is ready to run for the post.

The source said that key Pheu Thai members agreed that they should name their own candidate as they have the most House seats.
