Pheu Thai indictment faces delay

Prosecutors are likely to postpone a decision on Thursday on whether to indict three Pheu Thai Party key figures accused of flouting the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) ban on political gatherings of five or more people.

The three are Watana Muangsook, Chaturon Chaisang and Chusak Sirinil, who were charged with colluding to stage a political gathering of more than five people without permission from the NCPO, and with sedition under Section 116 of the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors had planned to make their indictment decision known on Thursday.

But because the suspects had submitted a request for "fairness" and requested an additional investigation, the decision is likely to be deferred to a later time, said Wichian Thanomphichai, chief of the Department of Criminal Litigation at the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG). He did not say when.

Narinphong Chinaphak, a lawyer representing Mr Watana, said he would represent his client at Thursday's meeting with prosecutors as Mr Watana was not required to attend in person.

On May 17 last year, the NCPO sent its legal team, led by Col Burin Thongpraphai, to the party's headquarters on Phetchaburi Road to warn members they were violating an order which bans political gatherings of five or more people, among other transgressions.

Despite the warning, the conference went ahead anyway.

On hearing the warning, the party cut the number of speakers to three -- Mr Chusak, Mr Chaturon and Mr Watana.

Other key figures from the party were among the attendees.

They included Pol Lt Gen Viroj Pao-in, Phumtham Wechayachai, Noppadon Pattama and Chaikasem Nitisiri.

Mr Chaturon said back then that he and seven other Pheu Thai politicians had been deliberately singled out for prosecution by the regime.

He argued the press conference should not have been regarded as a political gathering either in substance or form.
