'Phenomenal, the best' - Why Arsenal legend is the greatest forward in Premier League history

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has been named as the "best ever overseas player" in the Premier League era by a panel featuring three ex-players.

The Frenchman, who helped the Gunners to two Premier League titles and won the league's golden boot award four times during his time in north London, has also been picked as the greatest striker in the English top flight in the past 27 years.

Henry was picked by a panel of four that included former Premier League stars such as Ruud Gullit, Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, with journalist Rory Smith also included as part of the debate on BBC programme, The Premier League Show.

And despite other players being mentioned in the debate for best striker in the Premier League era, including former Chelsea star Didier Drogba, Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and former Manchester United forwards Eric Cantona and Ruud van Nistelrooy, Henry came out on top.

The Frenchman was also named by the panel as the best ever overseas player in the Premier League, with each of the former players glowing in their praise for Henry, who was named player of the season in the Premier League in 2003/04 and in 2005/06.

Arsene Wenger reveals the one big sacrifice Thierry Henry must make to succeed in management

Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton said: "I think the greatest player has to be Henry. What couldn't he do? What didn't he have? He could get the crowd off of their seats and he was just a phenomenal Premier League player, the best.

"What he has brought to the Premier League in terms of people paying money to watch a player, he is the one you would go and watch. He would be my number one."

Ex-Chelsea and Newcastle United manager Ruud Gullit echoed Sutton's view, adding that Henry was "a player that everyone wanted to go to the football stadium for".

Why Arsene Wenger being named the 32nd best manager of all time is a 'load of nonsense'

Fans are able to vote for who they think is the best overseas player in the Premier League era, with the results set to be announced on BBC programme Football Focus on Saturday.
