Pharmacies begin vaccinating 18-34 year olds as owner calls for patience from youngsters

Pharmacies have started vaccinating those aged between 18 and 34 with the 'one-shot' Johnson & Johnson jab.

There were reports of queues in some popular areas on Monday as the largest cohort to date registered and attended vaccination appointments, which were opened up to them on Friday by the HSE. See the full list of pharmacies offering jabs

Darragh Connolly owns Haven Pharmacy in Dungarvan.

He told RTE's Morning Ireland that they were "delighted" to be a part of the plan.

Mr Connolly said "We're delighted to be at the heart of the community to help with the fight for Covid. We only have a small amount of Janssen doses at the moment, but we'll get a delivery this week, hopefully on Wednesday and then another one next week.

"What we are asking is for people to be patient with us and indeed they have. This cohort of 18-34 year olds have been very patient."

Mr Connolly also added that the waiting list for jabs at his pharmacy were quite long.

He said "I have over 150 people waiting on the list at which stage I closed it and we also have the day-to-day running the pharmacy. But it's a great update that people are signing up that quickly for the jab.

"We have a capacity to administer 100 vaccines a week - if we can get that kind of supply, we can get that many vaccinated. The HSE have said there could be 200,000 vaccines coming into the country in the next few weeks."

Dungarvan has struggled badly in recent weeks, with the incidence rate in the area being over five times the national average (600 cases per 100,000 population vs the national rate of 107 per 100,000.)

Mr Connolly said that he was not overly concerned by the spike

"One of the things that's so important to remember is that Covid can strike anywhere and anytime. Dungarvan had been below the average for a lot of the pandemic, but with the Delta variant and restrictions being eased people may have let down their guard. What I will say is the reaction of locals has been fantastic - they're following all the health measures."
