PGI Chandigarh plans smart bikes to end parking woes

CHANDIGARH: PGI is planning to have smart bikes inside the campus to tackle parking problems. The step will enable the faculty to decongest the traffic flow.

"We recently held a meeting to discuss the issue and had a word with the MC commissioner. But it will take some time to come up on the campus under phase 3 of MC's bicycle project," said deputy director, administration, PGI, Kumar Gaurav Dhawan. He said, "In the meantime, we will have a stand and cycles on trial basis. We will get some support under corporate social responsibility initiatives."

The cycle stand will come up adjacent to the advanced eye centre.

'3rd multilevel parking being planned at PGI'

"Besides smart bikes, there is a plan to set up another multi-level parking in the institute. It will be at the area behind the dental centre and will be the third such parking on the campus," Dhawan said.

"A one-point stop for patients for tests, registration and fee payment will also ease the traffic flow. There are some 40 kiosks that will come up under the hospital information system 2. These machines will be used for fee payment for admitted patients. Subsequently, we will have these for the OPD patients as well," said Prof Vivek Lal, PGI director.

The shuttle bus services are also being improved for patients to have accessibility within the campus. "We will soon have more buses. These will move to and fro all the advanced centres for the OPD patients. The multilevel parking coming up near the new OPD is also being fast-tracked," said the director.

At any given time, there are over 10,000 vehicles on the PGI campus and at present there is one multilevel parking near the new OPD.
