The PGA Tour made its return this weekend with the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas, and Sunday’s final round at Colonial served as the perfect reminder that golf is just brutal.
Xander Schauffele was the co-leader heading into the final two holes and faced an easy three-foot try for par on 17.
It was the kind of putt that professional golfers should make without thinking. And for Schauffele, specifically, he had put together a round that included two made putts from beyond 30 feet. It should have been an easy par to put him in position to compete in the playoff with Daniel Berger and Collin Morikawa.
But, then, this happened …
The ball lipped out on 17, and Schauffele had to settle for bogey. He’d miss out on the playoff. Putts don’t get unluckier than this:
But Schauffele won’t be alone in thinking about missed opportunities from short range. Morikawa also missed from short to give Berger the win in the playoff.
Ouch.
Just when you think you’re playing some of your best golf, something like that happens. We can all relate, Xander and Collin.
