PFN ranks Giants’ Joe Judge mid-pack among NFL head coaches

Where does New York Giants head coach rank among the 32 head coaches in the NFL these days? Right in the middle, according to Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network.

In an exercise that broke coaches down into groups such as ‘Rookie head coach tier,’ ‘probably not the guy tier,’ ‘still early but there’s ups and downs,’ ‘long-time decent coaches tier,’ ‘established and good tier,’ ‘impossible to ignore despite inexperience tier,’ ‘certified winners but older tier,’ ‘still somewhat new but appear to be a great tier,’ ‘the offensive wizards that win tier’ and ‘possible Hall of Fame tier,’ Judge fit into the ‘young coaches that look promising tier.’

18) Joe Judge, New York Giants

I was skeptical of the former special teams coach making assistant coaches run laps at practice, but the Giants appeared well-coached in 2020. Their defense was much improved, and the offense survived despite being held back by an injury to their star running back, a lack of high-end wide receiver output, underwhelming quarterback play, and Jason Garrett. Additionally, the Giants’ roster improved during the offseason. It all comes down to whether Daniel Jones can limit his turnovers.

The list is all over the place except at the top where Bill Belichick is No. 1 and Andy Reid No. 2. Judge is a disciple and former confidant of Belichick who has also worked for Alabama’s Nick Saban, widely regarded as the top coach in college football.

Judge finished 6-10 in his first year with Big Blue but his transition period was stunted by the COVID-19 restrictions. He naturally gets a mulligan for that. This year, Judge will have the full benefit of all of the minicamps and offseason programs so we’ll get to see if the Judge aura is for real.
