Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been solid through the team’s first three games of the 2020 season, completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 809 yards and six touchdowns to one interception.
However, Pro Football Focus’ Steve Palazzolo notes that Tannehill has to do a better job at avoiding sacks when he’s pressured in an article pointing out the biggest weakness of every NFL signal-caller.
As we’ve studied pass protection, more accountability is put on the quarterback regarding sack rate, especially when looking at sack rate on pressured dropbacks. This is a longtime weakness in Tannehill’s game, as he often ranks near the top in percentage of pressured dropbacks that turn into sacks. Early returns are favorable in this department in 2020, but Tannehill had the third-highest percentage at 31.0% last season after ranking second at 29.2% in 2018. Tannehill has improved his accuracy and decision-making with the Titans, but cutting down on the sacks is the next step in his development.
Through three games, the Titans have allowed a total of 22 pressures, leading to the offensive line being ranked as the No. 18 unit, per PFF.
Tannehill has been sacked just three times, though, which is a far cry from the 17 sacks the Titans allowed through the first three games of 2019.
