PFF admits they were too low on Patrick Mahomes during 2017 NFL draft

One outlet is owning up to the fact that they underrated Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes leading up to the 2017 NFL draft.

Pro Football Focus recently took a look back at the prospects they were too low on that year. One of the players that PFF focused their attention on was Patrick Mahomes, who was unanimously underrated coming out of Texas Tech.

Mahomes was ranked No. 29 on the PFF draft board.  Here is what the folks at PFF had to say about their ranking on Mahomes in 2017:

For as good as Mahomes was at Texas Tech, we still weren’t completely sold. The volume was fantastic in college, but his 85.2 passing grade and routine freelancing left us hesitant, as he ended up ranked 29th on our 2017 draft board. After an MVP season, anyone who had him lower than the number one overall was mistaken.

Many people openly mocked the Chiefs for trading up and selecting Patrick Mahomes at No. 10 overall. In redraft scenarios, people are taking Mahomes No. 1 overall after his 2018 MVP season. He’s become the early favorite to be the best player to come out of the 2017 draft class.

It’s funny that PFF highlighted Mahomes’ freelancing in college as one of the reasons he landed at No. 29. His ability to create outside the pocket ended up being one of the reasons that PFF named Mahomes their MVP of the 2018 season. They were worried about his passing grade in college, but Mahomes finished the 2018 season with more big-time throws than any other QB in the NFL. Turns out not all PFF data is predictive of NFL success. At least now PFF is making good on their low ranking for Mahomes.
