Is Fantastic Four #52 “The Black Panther!” a Collectible? Is It a Key Issue?

Fantastic Four #52 is a vitally important key issue. The Black Panther and the kingdom of Wakanda are now household names. The first Black Panther film became a global sensation and the focus of the national zeitgeist for months.

Fantastic Four #52 is a landmark comic book in terms of history and culture; Black Panther was the first Black Marvel superhero. The Jim Crow era in the United States legally ended in 1965, so it was no happy coincidence that a new Black superhero made the cover of a mainstream Marvel comic book months later.

2018’s Black Panther made $1.34 billion and 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever made $860 million. Both films collectively made over $2 billion.

The tragic death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 divided comic book fans so much that no one wants to see anyone else play the role. The MCU will recast T’Challa sometime in the future. The character is a global sensation in comic books and film that fans want to see more of.

Fantastic Four #52 was a vital key issue long before the MCU films.

Issue Synopsis

Fantastic Four #52, “The Black Panther!”, starts with the Fantastic Four receiving an invitation to visit the African nation of Wakanda. Upon arrival they fight Black Panther, who almost defeats them. Black Panther reveals his true identity as T’Challa. T’Challa then explains the nation of Wakanda, the herbs he takes for his powers, Wakanda’s technology, and more.

The Fantatsic Four and the Black Panther are then attacked by Ulysses Klaw. Klaw is a 20th century colonialist type who wants to steal Wakanda’s vibranium. Klaw killed T’Challa’s father a decade earlier; T’Challa removed Klaw’s hand in battle. Then, Klaw uses vibranium to create a sound weapon on his hand.

This comic introduces the Black Panther and origina tropes of Wakanda that would be built upon by later writers and used for inspiration in the MCU.
