PFA Player of the Year: Liverpool and Man City dominate as shortlist is revealed

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk and Manchester City star Raheem Sterling head a six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award.

Title rivals Liverpool and Man City have five of the nominees between them, with Sterling joined by teammates Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva, while Reds forward Sadio Mane is also in contention. Chelsea’s Eden Hazard completes the list.

Van Dijk has transformed Liverpool’s defence since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018, and has been in superb leading the best defence in the Premier League.

Sterling, meanwhile, has enjoyed arguably his best season to date, with 23 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, as well as standout performances for England.

Aguero, meanwhile, has struck 30 times this season and is in a wide-open battle for the Premier League golden boot with 19 league goals, while Bernardo has become one of Pep Guardiola’s key men in his second season at the club.

Mane’s inclusion ahead of teammate Mo Salah is testament to his displays as Jurgen Klopp’s side look for a first ever Premier League title, while Hazard has been Chelsea’s standout performer in a tumultuous campaign.
