Peyton Manning helped Jets land Trevor Siemian

When the New York Jets had a head coach opening earlier this year, former Denver Broncos quarterbacks Peyton Manning recommended one of his former coaches for the job: Adam Gase.

Gase ended up getting the job, probably thanks in part to Manning. The retired quarterback helped New York again last week when the team was trying to sign one of his former teammates: Trevor Siemian.

Siemian signed a one-year deal with New York after exchanging text messages with his ex-teammate. Manning wasn’t the only reason Siemian decided to join the Jets, but he certainly factored into Siemian’s decision.

“I texted Peyton and just went back and forth with him, but he obviously thinks a lot of Coach Gase,” Siemian told the team’s website, via Spencer Aber of Jets Wire.

“Being with some of the guys that were there in Denver when Coach Gase was there, before I had gotten there, they spoke really highly of him. That and a bunch of other reasons are why I’m here and I’m super excited.”

Siemian was one of the Broncos’ backup quarterbacks in 2015 when the team won Super Bowl 50. Manning retired after that season and Siemian took over as the team’s starter in 2016.

Denver traded Siemian to the Minnesota Vikings last offseason and he served as a backup in 2018 before hitting free agency earlier this month. He will serve as Sam Darnold’s backup in New York.
