Peyton Manning gave Joe Burrow advice leading up to NFL Draft

During an appearance on ESPN on Sunday, former Colts and Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning talked about giving advice to LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, who is expected to be selected first overall in the NFL Draft on Thursday.

“Joe called me last week,” Manning said. “Obviously, we have somewhat of a relationship since he came down to our football camp last summer. I try to stay in touch with all of the quarterbacks that come down to the camp and [aim to] be a resource for them — especially as they approach their NFL dreams.”

Manning was selected by Indianapolis with the first overall pick in the 1998 NFL draft. Burrow is expected to be selected by the Bengals with the first overall pick in this year’s draft after leading LSU to a CFB National Championship victory last season.

“What an exciting year Joe had,” Manning said. “He called me about some of the things I tried to do when I was a rookie that maybe he can apply to his NFL career . . . . I threw 26 interceptions [as a rookie], that’s still a record. If Joe wants to break that [record], I’d be okay with that. We’d still be friends.”

Leave it to Manning to have nothing but kind things to say about Burrow while still finding a way to throw in some humor. Manning has also been helping mentor Drew Lock, Denver’s second-year quarterback.
