Pets get a lift as ride-sharing service launches in Newcastle today

A RIDE-SHARING giant will allow pets to travel in Newcastle for a surcharge from Thursday as part of a new service expanding around the country.

Uber Pet will launch in the Hunter after a trial in Sydney and Brisbane.

The service's arrival in the Hunter coincides with a roll-out across Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra, Hobart, Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Geelong, Wollongong and Darwin.

Drivers who opt in to carrying pets will receive a fee of $6 to $7 extra for adding furry passengers to their fare, the company said.

Travellers with service animals should continue to use normal Uber services given the legal status of those companions.
