Petrol stations introduce new £30 top up limits amid fuel crisis

Heavy queues at petrol stations have led to BP, Shell and Texaco to introduce refill limits on drivers.

Birmingham Live reports that stations belonging to these companies have been forced to bring in £30 top up limits for drivers as they continue to panic buying fuel.

Petrol stations have issued statements urging customers to remain calm and only fill up with what they need, as the heavy queues and panic buying is causing the delays rather than a shortage.

Drivers have been told that there is currently no shortage of fuel, only a lack of drivers to transport the fuel to stations and forecourts.

EG Group, who run fuel stops under the BP, Shell and Texaco companies, has issued the new £30 limits on drivers to ensure that all customers have a "fair chance to refill."

Emergency vehicles and HGV drivers have been exempt from the new limit due to their 'vital role at this time.'

A lack of lorry drivers has led to a few issues with tankers getting to forecourts, but drivers have been told that there is enough to go around and that there is no need for the panic buying.

Despite these reassurances, drivers have been spotted creating heavy queues at stations and filling up jerry cans.

The new refill limits will be rolled out across hundreds of UK stations and forecourts as a means to try and make sure everyone can refill as normal.

PRA chairman Brian Madderson told the BBC that the panic buying is responsible for the depleted pumps and forecourt closure.

British Retail Consortium director Andrew Opie said the truck driver shortage meant "we won't be able to get all the products on to the shelves that we would have liked to."

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: "While there has always been and continues to be plenty of fuel at refineries and terminals, we are aware that there have been some issues with supply chains."
