Petrol station charging £2.68 a litre sells out of fuel

A petrol station in Chelsea has sold out of petrol, despite charging almost double the average price of fuel at £2.68-a-litre.

According to a report by the Mirror Online, The Cloisters Gulf Petrol station is charging £2.68 for Unleaded fuel, and £2.68 for Super Unleaded.

The station, situated on Sloane Avenue in London, has been placed in the expensive category when compared to average prices. The RAC foundation found that "the average price around the UK for Unleaded petrol, as at September 30, was £1.36, while the average price for Super Unleaded fuel was £1.48."

Still, the high prices didn't put motorists off from filling up their tanks.

A carpark manager at the station, Kajem Nava, confirmed the the Mirror Online that fuel had run out yesterday, but was expecting to get more fuel on Monday.

However, an expert has warned that the fuel shortage crisis will only get worse.

On the BBC Radio 4 Today programme, chairman of the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) Brian Madderson said it remains a "really big problem" in London and the South East.

He said: "In London and the South East and possibly parts of eastern England, if anything it had got worse."

He also went on to say that drafting in the military to help with deliveries will only have a limited impact.

Mr Madderson said: "This isn't going to be the major panacea, it's a large help but in terms of the volume, they are not going to be able to carry that much.

"We do need a prioritisation of deliveries to filling stations - particularly the independent ones which are the neighbourhood retail sites - in London and the South East starting immediately."

"Expect anything from 1, 2 or even 3p a litre increases at the pump. This is not profiteering. This is genuine wholesale price increases causes by global factors."
